The answer is YES!

Millennials, also known as Gen Y, were born anywhere from the 1980’s to the early 2000’s and they are the largest population group as of 2019! PLUS this group is GROWING! Meanwhile the second largest group, Baby Boomers, is declining.

Not only are millennials the largest population group, they are the best educated group in US history. One-third of older millennials have earned at least a 4-year college degree or more. And now, this group is beginning to settle down and start families. Which means they are definitely your customers, or if not now, very soon.

Ok, so we know that millennials are an important group of people that we should be considering in our marketing efforts, the next question is how. You need to understand how this generation considers making a purchase, what they find important and how to attract them to your product.

Here are five things to consider when marketing to a millennial:

  1. Be authentic and relatable with content-driven marketing
  2. Be charitable – give back to a good cause in your community or maybe on a bigger scale and share what you are doing
  3. Sell an experience, not a “thing”
  4. Promote sharing, give and get – give $10 get $10 is a well known sharing model
  5. Social proof – reviews, friend recommendations and social interactions are all ways to prove to them that you are the right choice

When you think about it, its not just millennials that are starting to respond to this type of in-bound marketing, but ALL of us! How many times do you read reviews before making a purchase or selecting a service? How many times do you choose to interact with an authentic post instead of a sale focused one? I bet you have at least one business that you chose to purchase from because of its charitable approach.

Here are a few takeaways to get you started on the millennial marketing path:

  1. Promote and ask for reviews. They are the driving force of purchasing choices.
  2. Don’t go straight to the sale, but provide authentic content that everyone can relate to and encourages further interaction.
  3. Be charitable and promote it!

Keep these things in mind in your marketing efforts and you are sure to turn a few millennial heads!
