#WHATAREHASHTAGS?

Hashtags are those words or phrases preceded by a hashtag sign (#, aka number sign or pound sign) used on social media sites like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to help identify your messages on a specific topic.

WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER USING HASHTAGS IN YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS?

Think of a hashtag as a way of joining a conversation. They help categorize content on social media. Similar hashtags can be grouped together with other relevant content from people and businesses allowing you to reach more people making your content discoverable by people that may not follow your account. They can also increase participation in your posts. Here is an example of how a hashtag can add context to your message:

You know it! Now do it! #vote #midterms

Not only can you join a conversation but you can add a little humor to your message. Here is an example:

Wearing socks with Crocks is so stylish #kidding #dontdoit

Clicking on that hashtag will show you all of the comments or posts that have included that specific hashtag. That is why it is important to use your hashtags wisely.

HERE ARE A FEW DO’S AND DON’TS TO GUIDE YOU

Don’t have more hashtags than text in your message.

This can be considered #spam. Try to stick to three hashtags or less. Yes, the more hashtags you have the more people you will reach, but are they actually people you want to reach? With large amounts of hashtags you will likely reach spammers or other people just looking for more followers rendering your hashtags ineffective.

Do be specific.

The more specific your hashtags are the more targeted your audience is. This will create better engagement with your post.

Do know your social media platform.

Photo and video platforms like Instagram and Tumbler use hashtags to describe images. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter use hashtags to join conversations.

Do create hashtags to support your brand.

Don’t use your brand name as a hashtag, but instead choose hashtags that support your brand and what you stand for. Make sure that you stay consistent and you will gain participation and brand recognition.

It’s time to put the power of hashtags to work for you! Keep them specific and relevant, and you will start to see an increased participation in your posts.
